Turning Pain into Purpose: My Journey to Advocacy
Growing up, I encountered several incidents of sexual harassment—perpetrated by strangers, family friends, and even relatives. These experiences were deeply confusing and isolating, as topics like sex and related issues are rarely discussed in our culture. Parents often avoided these conversations, leaving children without the guidance they needed to navigate such situations. During these moments, I had no trusted adult to turn to. Instead, I confided in a friend who, out of fear and helplessness, advised me to stay silent. Looking back, I realize how this silence perpetuated the harm.
Among the many incidents of sexual assault and attempted abuse, one stood out vividly. I was running an errand with my brother for my sick mother. On our way home, a middle-aged man called us over and, trusting his authority as an adult, we followed him. He led us to a secluded spot and began undressing. My brother and I stood there in shock, frozen and unsure of what to do. Thankfully, a woman passing by intervened and saved us from further harm.
Her courage left an indelible mark on me. Today, I strive to be that woman in the lives of other children—an advocate, protector, and voice of reason in their most vulnerable moments.
Building Safe Spaces Through WC4E Support
The support from WC4E has been instrumental in transforming my vision into action. With their funding, we established our “Literacy Clinique”, a safe space for children and youth to learn, grow, and become aware of sexual violence. The training we received through the “Enough Abuse Campaign” in Massachusetts helped us deepen our understanding of child protection and develop a partnership that strengthens our cause.
This initiative has also provided me with invaluable connections, including a mentor, an accountability partner, and a network of professionals who continue to guide and inspire me.
Our Mission and Aspirations
At the Literacy Clinique, we create learning opportunities for children and youth while fostering awareness about sexual violence. It’s a space where young minds are empowered to speak out, seek help, and protect themselves.
Looking ahead, we aspire to expand our impact by:
Collaborating with more organizations and stakeholders.
Extending the reach of the Literacy Clinique.
Establishing a community library to promote literacy and education.
Creating an adolescent reproductive health center to provide resources and education on sexual and reproductive health.
Through these initiatives, we aim to build a world where children feel safe, supported, and empowered to thrive.
