Suhuyini Karmil
Suhuyini Karmil is driven by a passion for empowering women and marginalized communities through education and economic inclusion. Suhuyini has led impactful initiatives with multiple Non-Governmental Organizations advocating for gender equality, economic empowerment, and inclusive governance. As a Lead for Ghana Fellow in 2019, Suhuyini further developed her leadership skills by working on education initiatives that addressed equity gaps in Ghana’s schools. Her work across education and social protection has empowered underrepresented groups and created lasting community impact. Suhuyini holds a Bachelor’s degree in Renewable Natural Resources from the University for Development Studies and a Master’s in Development Management from the Institute of Local Government Studies in Ghana. Her career includes leadership roles in international development organizations, such as her current position as Senior Gender Equity and Social Inclusion Manager at DAI, where she works to integrate gender-responsive and inclusive policies into development projects.
One of her key accomplishments is leading the Girls' Education and Self Empowerment Program (GESEP), which supports adolescent girls through mentorship, leadership training, and financial literacy. This initiative has empowered young adolescents to return to school and actively engage in their communities. GESEP aims to address the barriers that prevent girls from accessing and completing their education in northern Ghana, where child marriage, teenage pregnancy, and gender-based violence are prevalent challenges.Suhuyini’s long-term goal is to influence national and international policies that promote inclusive development and gender equity. She hopes that the Women Changemakers for Education fellowship will provide her with the tools and network to expand the GESEP program, reaching more girls, and scaling her impact in education across rural Ghana.
